So what I can say? This is a 10 page preview I converted from some image files from the AdultSwim blog. So the images are little smaller than we’re used to. Apparently there is a full comic out there somewhere, but I don’t have a copy of that. So this is just a teaser. It looks to be so-so, but as a fan I personally had to have it.
Fan of what? Why Black Dynamite the movie of course. For the last 10 years movie makers have been trying to depict/recapture/pay homage to all those great 70′s Blackploitation films that featured “Black superheroes” like Shaft, 3 the Hard Way, Black Ceaser and of course SuperFLy. If you were born between.. let’s say 1955 and 1975 then you were “there” and these remakes are probably funny to you. So although Undercover Brother and Pootie Tang made me laugh Black Dynamite was done so accurately its SHOCKING. I mean, it really looks like it was made back in the day.
And man were those the days! Me and my friends would go to the movies and watch double and triple features and we MIGHT even stay and watch 4 movies. We just made a day of it. It was really a different world.
To keep with the old school look, the “comic” has a fake high issue number and low price tag plus looks like it was hidden in the attic for the last 20 years.
But to be honest these days there are more and more of these comics that crossover into movies or movies that cross over into comics. Even television shows. Off the top of my head I know there are comic versions of Star Trek, Kolchak, that new show Hard Target, the X-Files. And for movies there is no shortage, just look at the new Green Hornet movie. So it’s a good thing. I like it! The idea that characters and story lines don’t have to die but can live on and on and on. Not to mention characters will always LOOK as good as they did in their heyday. I’m so glad that the Farscape comics exist. Not to mention Buckaroo Banzai. Now that’s a weird one, you don’t realize how GOOD the writing is in the movie until you actually get to read those some writers doing comics and you see how skilled they are. In the movie a lot of the dialogue kind of got lost in the action. Anyway, can’t wait for the full issue of Black Dynamite.
